On December 7, 2022 the Head of the Department of Chemistry E.E. Kopishev participated in annually meeting - COMSATS – Commission for Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South in Pakistan. The Head of the Department have discussed issues about a mutual international projects in the field of chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental issues and nanotechnology and collaboration in terms of Scholarship/Fellowship opportunities.

COMSATS was founded in Islamabad, in 1994 where Government representatives of 36 Developing countries participated. Program Focus: Science and Technology for Sustainable Development.

COMSATS mission is to help create a world where all nations are at peace with each other and capable of providing a good quality of life to their populations in a sustainable way, using modern scientific and technological resources.

Objectives are 

a) to sensitize the countries in the South to the centrality of science and technology in the development process, to the adequate resource allocation for research and development, and to the integration of science and technology in the national and regional development plans;

b) to support the functioning and activities of the Network of International Science and Technology Centres for Sustainable Development in the South, established at the foundation meeting of the Commission;

c) to support other major initiatives deigned to promote indigenous capacity in science and technology for science-led sustainable development, and to help mobilise long-term financial support from international donor agencies and from Government/Institutions in the North and the South to supplement the financing of international scientific projects in the South; 

d) to provide leadership and support for North-South and South-South cooperative schemes in education, training and research, such as the proposal to set up programmes of scholarships for research at centres of excellence in the South; and

e) to support the relevant programmes and initiatives of major scientific organizations working for the development and promotion of science and technology in the South.

At different times, well-known and prominent people took part in the commission, such as Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan H.E. Mr. Ashkat Aymagambetov Kanatovich Hon. Nana Addo D. Akufo-Addo President of Ghana Ex-Officio Chairperson COMSATS, Prof. Ashraf H. Shaalan Former President NRC-Egypt Elected Chairperson Coordinating Council.

There are several COMSATS’ Network of International S&T Centres of Excellence (CoEs) such as Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), Bangladesh, nternational Center for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES), China, The Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), Indonesia, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), Kazakhstan and etc.
