On October 10-12, 2018, the eighth meeting of the parties to the UN Convention on the protection and use of transboundary watercourses and international lakes was held in Astana, in the EXPO conference hall. The organization of the event corresponded to a high level. As a result of the meeting, the members (12) of the water Convention Bureau were selected. The President of the institution selected Ardak Zekeshev (Ministry of agriculture), prepared draft decisions and programme of work for the 2019-2021 year. One of the organizers of the event was a visiting Professor with the faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of physical and economic geography, specialization "Hydrology", Serik Akhmetov Kabdrualievich.
Akhmetov Serik Kadrualievich, now holds the position of Director of the International water assessment centre (IWAC). At this event, he made a welcoming speech and congratulated Kazakhstan on the opening of the center for water resources assessment (IWAC) (the center opened in 2017).
Also Serik Kadrualievich presented the planned 4 pilot project and expressed willingness to advise the Bureau and the Secretariat of the Convention. The work program for the next period is quite ambitious, will include such issues as transboundary cooperation in the context of water supply to the planet, people, observing transparency and peace; water supply in the context of increasing water scarcity on the planet; implementation of reporting under the Convention in accordance with indicator 6.5.2 of the sdgs; strategy for implementation of the Convention at the global level; cooperation with partners (regional and subregional, joint bodies, international organizations (UN-water, GEF); use of the NEXUS approach in transboundary basins; identification and assessment of the benefits of transboundary cooperation; adaptation to climate change in transboundary basins; water and industrial accidents; IWAC.
This event was attended by a lot of representatives of various organizations from the field of water resources and we can say that the event was held at the highest level.
The next session of the Convention Estonia offered to host in 2021 at the end of Vice-Minister of the Ministry of agriculture Nysanbayev E. N. summed up and thanked the moderators and organizers of the event.
